On track to produce niobium pentoxide in 2015

Kanyika Niobium Project

Niobium is added to steel to enable steel mills to produce high-margin products through enhanced flexibility, weight reduction and strength. Even though more than 90% of niobium is used in steel, niobium consumption has been growing at twice that of steel for the last 20 years.
 

The Kanyika Niobium Project is an advanced niobium project aiming to produce high purity niobium pentoxide and tantalum pentoxide powders.
 

Project Highlights

  • The Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS) is on time and budget subject to:
    • Environmental Impact Assessment
    • Development Agreement completion
    • Marketing & Offtake Agreements
  • GMMA (Globe’s Malawi Company) is concluding negotiations with the Government of Malawi (GoM) on securing a project Development Agreement and approving the project environmental impact assessment.  
  • Major shareholder, Chinese state owned enterprise, East China Mineral Exploration and Development Bureau (ECE) providing technical, financial and marketing expertise.
  • Positive response from Chinese banks.
  • Relocation planning is underway with area census complete.
  • Flowsheet development near completion.
  • Tailings storage facility (TSF) and waste management design complete.
  • Infrastructure and services design complete.


Post 31 December 2012, Globe continued work towards an updated Mineral Resource Estimate
