The Australia-Africa Mining Industry Group (AAMIG) will continue to raise awareness around the issue of facilitation payments. The government announced in November that it was considering banning facilitation payments, which are made to speed up routine government actions. It was thought that the removal of the facilitation payment clause would work to combat corruption of foreign officials, with the federal government proposing to implement individual fines of up to A$1.1-million or ten-years jail time, and company fines of up to A$11-million for parties found to be guilty of bribery.
